Filtration, airflow, and heat are key factors when designing a new intake system for a turbocharged engine.
Our do88 intake system is developed to provide the turbo with good filtration, an improved airflow path, while keeping intake temperatures low. One of the design challenges with the B48 intake system is its location; it’s right next to the exhaust manifold, which quickly heats up this area of the engine bay.
High intake air temperatures are detrimental to engine performance, as the turbo will have to build pressure with hot, less dense air. Therefore, a completely enclosed intake system is the only way to ensure that IAT values are kept as low as possible. A completely enclosed system, however, causes a restriction, as it only has one standard airbox at the bottom to draw air in. During development, we realized that the system must have a secondary air supply to remove this restriction. Our closed airbox also features a heat shield to minimize radiant heat transfer from the exhaust manifold. To ensure sufficient air volume around the filter, we designed a large 7” airbox, which, of course, also leaves room for the strut braces.
In place of the standard intake pipe, we have designed a large 102 mm (4 inch) seamless aluminum pipe, which is connected to a custom-made silicone hose. A large custom-made air filter is installed in the intake pipe. The filter features a densely woven cotton gauze for better filtration. The air filter can, of course, be washed and reused if necessary, for optimal performance and long lifespan.
The original airbox and turbo intake pipe are designed with elements that minimize the noise produced by the turbo and air supply. Specifically, the factory intake pipe includes two silencers to ensure the turbo operates quietly. In contrast, our intake system comes without these noise-reducing elements, allowing for a more audible turbo spool and induction sound.
