Spool FX-170 HPFP Kit | Mercedes-Benz M278
The Spool Performance FX-170 is a high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) performance upgrade for Mercedes-Benz M278 engines. This solution is designed to remove the limitations of the standard fuel system, enabling significantly higher power potential in tuned twin-turbo V8 configurations.
What is the FX-170?
The FX-170 is an upgraded HPFP with a larger cylinder bore than the standard pump. This allows for approximately +50% greater fuel flow.
- +50% flow compared to stock
- Full E85 compatibility
-
Plug & Play installation: no cutting or wiring modifications
- Enables higher fuel delivery at higher power levels
The additional capacity allows for:
- Higher ethanol blends
- Larger turbochargers
- Higher power levels
Why is an upgrade necessary?
The M278 engine's stock HPFP is a significant bottleneck for tuning:
- Insufficient fuel delivery for higher power levels
- Limited ethanol capability
The FX-170:
- Significantly increases fuel system capacity
- Enables more powerful and safer tuning
- Supports demanding turbo and flex fuel setups

Software Requirements
The FX-170 requires software modifications:
- Calibration must be performed before use
- Operation without adjustment can cause damage and void the warranty
Spool:
- Provides calibration data to the tuner
- Helps find an experienced tuner
Note: Spool does not offer pre-made custom tunes
Important Note: LPFP
The low-pressure fuel system is critical:
- Inadequate LPFP can damage the HPFP and injectors
- HPFP lubrication relies on fuel flow
- Lack of fuel → wear and failure
Recommendation: ensure adequate low-pressure side upgrade
