Simply put: Wavetrac is the only gear-type differential lock on the market that does not lose traction even if one of the drive axles is lightened or loses load. This situation often arises, for example, during aggressive driving, when cornering on the track over bumps or on very slippery surfaces - more often than many people think.
How does Wavetrac affect performance?
Let’s take the example of a traditional gear-type lock (OEM, Quaife, MF, OBX, Truetrac, Torsen, etc.). You’re driving on a track and in a corner the inside wheel hits the curb and momentarily loses traction. This is normal in track driving. The problem is that during that brief moment the other wheel doesn’t get traction – the engine’s power isn’t being transmitted to the road.
Gear-type locks require a load on both axles to operate. Therefore, when one wheel becomes light, traction to the other wheel is momentarily interrupted. The result is that on the track or during aggressive riding, power is only transmitted intermittently to the wheel that is holding on.
Wavetrac is different. Its patented cam mechanism prevents loss of traction even if one wheel becomes lighter. The mechanism is able to create the necessary load inside the differential to compensate for the lost traction, allowing power to be directed to the wheel with better grip. The end result is smoother power transfer in corners, more predictable handling and an overall faster car.
