Wavetrac ATB Limited-Slip Differential (LSD) VW 02Q
MK7 Golf GTI & some TDI – 6-speed manual, front-wheel drive
Simply put: Wavetrac is the only geared limited-slip differential on the market that will not lose drive even if one drive wheel lightens or loses load. This situation often arises during aggressive driving, when driving over curbs on track corners, or on very slippery surfaces – more often than many might think.
How does Wavetrac affect performance?
Let's take an example of a traditional geared differential (OEM, Quaife, MF, OBX, Truetrac, Torsen, etc.). You are driving on a track, and in a corner, the inner wheel hits a curb and momentarily lightens. This is normal in track driving. The problem is that during that brief moment, the other wheel doesn't receive power – engine power is not transferred to the road.
Geared differentials require load on both axles to function. Therefore, in a situation where one wheel lightens, power to the other wheel is momentarily cut. The result is that on the track or during aggressive driving, power is only intermittently transferred to the gripping wheel.
With Wavetrac, the situation is different. Its patented cam mechanism prevents loss of drive, even if one wheel lightens. The mechanism can create the necessary load inside the differential to compensate for lost traction, allowing power to be directed to the gripping wheel. The result is smoother power transfer in corners, more predictable handling, and overall a faster car.
Other benefits
-
Patented carbon fiber Bias Plate for satellite gears
In most geared differentials, the satellite gears rotate directly against the casing, causing friction to change over time and reducing the differential's effectiveness. Wavetrac's carbon fiber plates maintain consistent performance throughout their lifespan.
-
Patented Wave Profile design
Eliminates traction problems occurring at near zero load, which are found in other ATB-type differentials.
-
ARP bolts throughout
Excellent strength and reliability for demanding use.
-
9310 steel gears
Installed in a machined or forged steel case for maximum durability.
-
Designed and manufactured in the USA
Wavetrac – Smooth is Fast
Wavetrac is an excellent choice for powerful street cars that are also used on the track. It is extremely durable, but in normal driving, it is practically imperceptible to the driver and the car's traction control systems.
On the track or during spirited street driving, it transfers power to both wheels without the handling problems caused by traditional clutch-type differentials – for example, there is no "pushing" that increases understeer.
Wavetrac outperforms other geared differentials because it does not lose drive in situations where one axle lightens – a situation that occurs surprisingly often in reality.
One of Wavetrac's most underrated features is also its very smooth power delivery at the limit of traction. The patented design makes power transfer predictable and smooth exactly when it is needed most: in the middle of a corner at the traction limit or on exit when maintaining speed with the throttle.
In these situations, the difference is clearly felt by the driver. Wavetrac makes the car faster because it allows you to drive with more confidence.
Smooth is fast.
